California Budget & Student Safety

Schools cannot physically reopen safely with the funding level proposed in the #MayRevision. Budget cuts to education would be devastating at a time when students need more support than ever.

Call your legislators at 855-977-1770 and ask them to pass a budget w/No cuts, no educator or school employee layoffs and to prioritize equity by repealing corporate tax credits.
The vote is Monday, June 15, 2020!

CARSPLUS Convention 2020

A partnership between MVSD and MVTA allowed special educations to attend the CARSPLUS Conference this past Friday and Saturday in Irvine, California. Brenda Mancia, Resource Specialist Teacher at Kranz, was an important part of getting this process started. Here she is with CA State Director of Special Education, Kristin Wright.

Interested in Being a Delegate to The 2020 NEA Convention?

The 2020 NEA Convention will be held in early July in Atlanta, Georgia at the Georgia World Congress Center.

If you are interested in attending the NEA Convention, please fill out the “Declaration of Candidacy” and submit it to the CTA Monrovia office (phone: 626-357-2095 / fax: 626-357-2451) no later than 5:00 p.m. on January 31, 2020.

If you are not elected to be one of the five delegates to represent CTA from the Service Center One area, then you can apply to be one of two delegates from MVTA that will go to the NEA Convention as a local delegate. The local delegate election will happen in March. Please let Patty Goytia at Voorhis know if you would like to run as a local delegate.

Note: You can run as a delegate for the local only, and not as a state delegate, but running for both state and local potentially saves the local money and potentially allows more MVTA members to attend.

Char Wong from Cal RTA on Retirement

Former MVTA President, Char Wong, representing Cal RTA (California Retired Teachers Association), spoke in front of the Representative Council meeting yesterday at Cogswell. She encouraged any teachers that are 3-5 years out from retirement to see a retirement counselor.

Char Wong shared that once a teacher retires they are no longer paying into STRS (State Teachers’ Retirement System) and they are no longer paying union dues. So those deductions will no longer be taken out of your check. Teachers would also automatically get a COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) increase every two years.

It’s natural to have questions and concerns about retirement, please take the time to call one of the Cal STRS Member Service Centers in Glendale, Irvine, Riverside, or Santa Clara.
