What are school personnel required to do if they witness an act of discrimination, harassment, intimidation, or bullying against a student?
According to Ed. Code 234.1(b)1, school personnel are required to take immediate steps to intervene when safe to do so.
This applies to all students on campus or attending a school activity no matter their "actual or perceived...immigration status...disability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, nationality, race or ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics."
I think that covers all of our students! So let’s embrace our students for who they are, and make school and school activities a place where our students can focus on their learning.
UTLA will strike this Monday, Jan. 14th if an agreement is not reached with LAUSD.

Governor Jerry Brown vetoed SB 328 on Thursday. The bill would have required middle and high schools to start no later than 8:30 a.m.
CTA was in favor of rejecting the bill stating on their website, “School start times should be decided at the local level and include community input. Local leaders, with this input, are best prepared to make these decisions that will best meet the needs of the students.”
A speech at the 2018 Service Center ONE Legislative Breakfast on September 15 given by assembly member Patrick O’Donnell of Long Beach mentioned that not all communities are alike and have different challenges. One community is unable to start school at 8:30 a.m. or later due to a train schedule. Another community has agriculture classes that start early in the morning during zero period.
There are benefits when we stand together.
